When the mould has set, the next step is to dig out all the clay and dissolve the polystyrene wighead with solvent. Every bit of clay has to be removed or it will appear as a piece taken out of the finished mask. When the mould is clean, it is filled up with latex and left for an hour. In that time a creamy layer of latex builds up on the inside of the mould and stays there when the excess is poured off. In twenty-four hours, the water and ammonia in the latex evaporates leaving a rubber film which picks up all the detail of the mask.
