Once I'd applied a few coats of plaster with the small brush, I'd work with a half inch brush, building up layer after layer until I was confident that I had full thickness over all the prominences like the ears and the tip of the nose. Some mould-makers add a layer of fibreglass or hessian into the plaster to strengthen the mould (which is something I should have done as it turned out).
